1944年冬，日军南北夹击，粤北坪石镇已成危巢，广州沦陷后辗转迁至坪石的国立中山大学面临再次迁校。数天系主任黄际遇(谢君豪饰)年近花甲，再逢动荡，他坚持保护学生，坚信有青年才有未来。偶遇香港天才考生邱扬(颜秋越饰)，黄际遇珍惜爱护，多方启迪。国难当头，邱扬热血入伍被骗，黄际遇竭力营救。邱扬觉悟，明白报国不仅只有慷慨捐躯，知识救国亦是大道。日军日渐逼近，各院系分散迁徙。黄际遇安排数天系师生撤离，但邱扬却留了下来，两人在最后一刻将图书馆长杜定友(蒋中炜饰)和部分图书送上最后一班火车。1945年1月17日，坪石沦陷，迁校竟成大逃亡，未及撤离的卫梓松(王宏伟饰)教授为国殉难。 七个月后，日本投降，黄际遇为女儿(叶语霏饰)举行婚礼，家国同庆。师生结伴返校途中，舟次清远，黄际遇不幸堕水罹难。
